java runtime on debian etch

Hi again, I know what you are probably thinking - why is there another thread about java runtime. Well, it is like this - I have looked at everything on installing jre-6ul-linux-i586.bin and tried them all but I can't seem to get it to work?!!! I would like to install the above to run the webmin applets for file transfers. I am used to webmin and would like to continue using it.

Is there anyone that can give me step by step install on debian etch?

I'll tell you how to do it the Debian way, which for Etch does not include 1.6, and it certainly does not include the bug-ridden webmin.

Make sure your sources.list file includes "contrib non-free"
# aptitude keep-all
# aptitude update
# aptitude install sun-java5-jre sun-java5-plugin

If you really need 1.6, It's available for Etch from backports.org

Hi rickh

Hi again, I had a problem with my Debian install so I did a reinstall.

The thing is I can't seem to amend my sources.list so that I get #contrib non-free". Below is a copy of my sources.list at the moment:

Quote:
#
# deb cdrom:[Debian GNU/Linux 4.0 r0 _Etch_ - Official i386 DVD Binary-1 20070407-11:40]/ etch contrib main

deb cdrom:[Debian GNU/Linux 4.0 r0 _Etch_ - Official i386 DVD Binary-1 20070407-11:40]/ etch contrib main

deb http://ftp.se.debian.org/debian/ etch main
deb-src http://ftp.se.debian.org/debian/ etch main

deb http://security.debian.org/ etch/updates main contrib
deb-src http://security.debian.org/ etch/updates main contrib

Can you give me suggestions as to what I should add - and how.

Much appreciated.
