Java, Eclipse and linux....install help

Hi all,

I'm running Mandriva2007, I just downloaded and installed this version of the jdk java_ee_sdk-5_02-linux.bin from the sun site. I accepted the default settings during the install. So jdk is installed at /opt/SDK/jdk, I set up my path and java_home to reflect this. I can open a terminal type java and javac and get output.

So I then downloaded eclipse, which is installed at /home/tom/eclipse. When I try to start eclipse it says can't find java or jvm and is looking here for them /home/tom/eclipse/jre!!

I'd like to know what the best practice is for storing these programs, i.e. should the jdk be in /usr/tom or /usr/local or something and also where should user installed applications normally be located. And also how should I tell eclipse where to find java as it doesn't seem to be paying attention to java_home, though I'm sure there's some subtlety i'm missing.

Any help would be great, then I can move on to the next problem.

To get the application to 'see' java, I suspect you need to make a sim-link in the application directory pointing to your java installation. This is the case in order to get Limewire to work, and so firefox can find java.

I would bet you will get lots of advice to your 'best practice' question. I'll offer you my opinion, but it is just that.

I put java in this path. /usr/java/jre1.5.0_06/ It isn't elegant, but I know where it is. I like it not to be in my /home directory so it is available to all users.

As for an application, same argument, /usr and add a directory for the application.
