IYO..What utilities do you NEED to know.
all.. in your opinion.. what programs/utilities does a good network admin or linux user NEED to know.. either a gui or terminal it doesnt matter.. what do you feel a user should use and what helps out the best..
someone must have a top 20 or so.. thanks..r |
i would get a book on the bash shell, it seems to be the most popular in the linux world. learning the shell to the point of being second nature will make life much easier.

IMO, a good network admin should not need to use GUI stuff to do his/her job - keeps things tidier if working remotely.
As for Linux users. The use of a good text based editor (I'm not going to stick my neck out and vote for either vi or emacs); certainly how to do mundane things like copy, move, change permissions on files; certainly how to mount partitions/devices; possibly how to use nfs/smb, depending on the networked situation of their computer; etc. By far I would say that the use of a good text editor is the most prominent thing, because with out it you can be very stuck. |
I personally always suggest to know vi. vi is the tool you need to know and of course how to type with a keyboard. ;)

network admin you said. Ok here it is
in and outs of syslogd in and outs of dhcpd and dhcp clients one or more (dhcpcd, pump) NIS setup DNS setup SSH setup FTP setup Webserver (maybe) setup NFS setup Maybe SAMBA setup along with appletalk Command line tools: nmap nc tcpdump various shells tar cpio compress (UNIX/linux) /proc file system structure and internals all the commands in /bin and many, many more. GUI (I guess there are not many) but ethereal is the one of the major. |
this was great everyone.. thanks for the lists..
if anyone else can add please do so for all... r :study: |
