iwconfig utility not working properly

Hello everyone

This is my first time here, so if I'm disobeying some rules, please be patient.

My problem here is in iwconfig. I have a home network configured with WPA2, and everything works fine with wpa_cli. I can connect without any problems to my encrypted network every time I need.
I cannot connect to open wireless network, though. Since I cannot use wpa_cli for it, I was forced to make use of iwconfig, which first gave me several problems (i.e. "IP address not supported", "set request on ... invalid" etc).

I've found out some workarounds for my previous problem, but now that I try to set my essid using iwconfig, my interface is not assigned an IP address (yes, dhcpcd is running and I've tried to rerun it more than once).

I'm now connecting with a USB tethering, and despite it is annoying, it works fine.

Please help me in any way, it's quite frustrating being connected via usb when you've available an open wi-fi connection!

Also, if you need further information, don't hesitate.

What distro are you using?

I have been connecting with the ip link tools in Arch

to find out what is the name of the interface just type ip link
whichever interface has a w in it that means that is the wireless

so I just type ip link set <wirelessinterface> up

then I do dhcpcd <wirelessinterface>

Although in Arch if you don't have Network Manager installed you can just type wifi-menu

Please give brief details of your distro.

It sort of sounds like you are trying to turn your PC into a wireless access point?
If not:-

Is your DHCP handled by a router or a separate home server machine?
Provided you have a (non-USB) wifi connection, you shouldn't normally be trying to run dhcpd.
You should be able to run iwconfig without any parameters.

I'm just running Slackware 14.0. Just in case you need it, my iwconfig version is 29.

Just tried it before you suggested it, but no results.
