iwconfig (no wireless extensions)
Has anyone seen this before. I am running ubuntu in vmplayer with Win Xp as my host. I can access the internet via wireless card. However, when I type iwconfig I get

No wireless extensions for all options.

Also I cannot manually configure the wireless as well

Is this because I am running umbuntu through VM Player?

I believe the short answer is yes, it is because your running Ubuntu in a virtual machine. When the virtual machine is established, it creates a virtual ethernet card that is almost certainly, so not a wireless one, even if the physical device is wireless. I've got a similar setup (Slackware host, CentOS and WinXP virtual machines) and all of the virtual machines see the network as wired only.

So Does That mean that I cannot run Kismet inside by vm since I am unable configure the kismet.conf file?

Programs like Kismet usually need direct access to the hardware, so no, it is highly unlikely to work from within a VM. If you want to run Kismet, you'll have to dual boot.
