iwconfig *no wireless extensions*


Well what it is I want to put the wi-fi into monitor mode so i can use fern for the wi-fi but i get this error no wireless extensions...

I am currently connected to my own wi-fi and using a compaq presario cq71 laptop and using backtrack 5r3 on vmware workstation...

and I can't figure it out...
any help would be great
