I have 3 iPod's: 3G, 1G nano & iTouch. all work great with Linux and no iTunes. what iPod do you have? running iTunes in wine won't give you good results even if you get it working.
You have ubuntu? 8.04 I suppose.
Have you tried just connecting it? it should show up on your desktop and open in rhythmbox by default. Most players on linux can handle ipods: Exaile, Rhythmbox, Amarok - announced for Listen...
I have had some trouble with Rhythmbox and my ipod shuffle, but Amarok and gtkpod worked just fine.
i have a ipod nano old version ! and a ipod touch yes it does open them but i did try to transfer some songs but it didnt work i think because of the file type ?????????

how did you try to transfer the songs? the ipod touch is a special case you can't sync over usb; you have to do it over wifi. I have both of those iPods. I'd like to help you but you have to be as specific as posible.
