it pains to install linux(how to install linux)
 

Can anyone suggest me a step by step detailed information on how to install fedrora8 i386,i have searched the particular website but could not find a thing,i want to dual boot,ihave xp and wants to keep linux secondary so plz give a detailed installation guide,i would be very thank full.

i assume that you already have winxp installed.

when installing linux under the boot section(assuming it is in /boot/)
you may need to change the boot list to include windows and default to it. make sure to put a delay of 4 seconds so you can switch between the two.

once you are one with this step you are good to go :)

if you installed linux first use the 'dd' command to copy out the boot section of your linux partition (look this up on internet for exact syntax). after you install windows you have no way to go into linux, using the file that dd created for you you can add the linux bootup to your windows bootup list :).

You may also want to look at some podcasts. I know of one called "linux convert" that is a video screencasts that takes you step by step through the install process. Not sure if there is one for fedora 8, but you may learn a good bit. I found it through iTunes but I'm sure you can google it.

I'm another new boy. I've tried several distros and I have to say that Fedora 8 has to be one of the cleanest for installation.

Like you I dual boot with Windows XP and for the moment, XP remains the default boot.

The first step is to decide where you are installing Fedora on your drives and if you decide that it's not going on a nice seperate blank drive use something like Partition Magic, (within Windows) to re-size your NTFS partition to make room.

Don't format your new partition using Windows since Fedora likes to do that itself and can get confused if you do it. Just leave the chunk of space free and unallocated.

Now boot using the live DVD and follow the prompts through until it gets to the decision as to where to install and what to do with Grub.

One of the options you should be offered is "default setup using free space" - Use that one but select "examine partition setup" since that step will bring you to the Grub set up screen. Don't change anything on the partition screen but when you get to the grub screen, it will show Fedora as the default and Windows XP as "other". Change the tick to default to "other" and you might decide to edit it to show something slightly more useful. The Fedora menu has a default delay of 5 seconds which I find plenty. If you need to change it, you can edit (as root) grub.conf once you are running.

hi all (esp Devbro)

u mean 2 say that new linux instln shud be in /boot partition?

or shud not be on / (system root)?

i have done following partitioning:

/ 6gb
/boot 500mb
vfat 1gb
swap 2 gb (twice of my ram)


on one website i read that we shud never instal grub/lilo on MBR.
Is it true?

i tried both but it gave me "kernel panic" error while installing RHEL4.0 on my SATA HD.
