i know nothing about wine, but form the error it cant get to the file /dev/mixer1 ,, id recommend you find out what sound system your distro uses then see if you can make that device?

feuer 03-27-2004 08:13 AM

SciYro:

I have chmodded 777 /etc/mixer1 so everyone should be able to access it. My Debian is using OSS, if you meant that.

sound system... OSS (open Sound System) or ALSA (advanced linux sound architechture)

depends on how new ur distro is, ALSA has made OSS redundant in kernel 2.6.X but it is possible to comile a 2.6 kernel with OSS. however its pointless since ALSA has a kick ass OSS compatability layer.

feuer 03-28-2004 04:51 AM

Well it's pretty new because I compiled 2.6.3 kernel just about a week ago. And I'm using OSS because it works just fine for me and it was somewhat easier to install (than ALSA).

Any suggestions to the actual problem?

feuer 03-28-2004 10:49 AM

I decided to get my hands dirty and uninstalled the wine packages (i had used apt-get to install wine) and downloaded sources for the newest wine (wine-20040309) and compiled with ./configure, make depend, make and make install. After that I configured the wine with wineinstall.

After that I ran winecheck, here is the output:

Code:

As you can see I have a problem with /dev/sequencer. How do I fix this problem? And yes...I tried to
check that /usr/src/linux/Documentation/modules.txt but that file didn't exist.

I also ran modconf to check if there was module related to that /dev/sequencer but there wasn't. I read
this tutorial

http://frankscorner.org/modules.php?...cb4e0c7425cc5.

And tried to open the winedefault.reg file with regedit, but that file seems to be missing. I addition to this system.ini and win.ini files are missing, too. Are these three files essential to wine ?

So please, I'm begging you to help me with this n00b problem...

qwijibow 03-29-2004 04:19 AM

You do know that wine isnt perfect right ?

have you checked with others to see if wine is actually cabable of running your application ?

there are many programs wine is still not complete enough to run !

feuer 03-29-2004 05:27 AM

Oh, yes I know it isn't perfect. And wine should be cabable of running SPWaW: http://appdb.winehq.org/appview.php?appId=199

I have also tried to use these programs:
http://appdb.winehq.org/appview.php?appId=1065
http://appdb.winehq.org/appview.php?appId=5

But they don't work either :D

NOTEPAD.EXE is the only program I have been able to run with wine...wuppaa.

Quote:

You do know that wine isnt perfect right ?
That sentence sounds like you think I'm trying to blame wine for not working generally...Well, I think wine is great app...It would be more greater if I managed to get it work proberly

So...any _Good_ advices?

qwijibow 03-29-2004 09:00 AM

No no, ofcourse not......

its just you said you didnt know anything about wine,
and wine's homepage doesnt exactly advertise that it can only run a small percentage of windows app's if you know what i mean.

anyway's sorry, i dont think i can help much,
but what exactly are you trying to get wine to run ?

99% of the time there are linux native alternativs to windows applications.

feuer 03-29-2004 10:35 AM

No hard fealings;)

One reasson why I'm trying to get wine running is that I want to play some windows games on Linux (like SPWaW). Another reason is that I just wanna get it running...=)

Of course it would be nice if I could use all my favourite windows apps in Linux and finally remove Windows.....one can dream...

qwijibow 03-29-2004 03:26 PM

well..... my experiance with linux and gaming is as follows....

Unreal Tournament = Native
Unreal tournament 2003 = Native
Unreal Tournament 2004 = Native
Unreal = WOrks with Wine
Half-Life = WOrks with Wine
Counter Strike = WOrks with Wine
Opposing forces = Works with Wine
Quake = Native
Quake 2 = Native
Quake 3 = Native

which is pretty good.

as for non game app's. ive found linux alternativs for all windows programs.

feuer 03-30-2004 05:05 AM

I have experience only in native Enemey Territory...I'm dying to get SPWaW,DoD,CoD and others to work with Linux

Several things I can see needed here:

1. Does this game/installer require the CD? Because the CD-ROM drive is not in your PATH...
Quote:

"Path" = "C:\\Windows;C:\\Windows\\System;X:\\;X:\\test;Y:\\"
.... when your CD-ROM drive is listed as E:\

2. Which version of Wine are we talking about here (by date)?

3. Do you have 3D acceleration for your video card (whatever it may be) working?

4. You're emulating Win98, right? What version of Windows do you have installed? If also Win98, I would suggest going to C:\Program Files\Common Files\Install Shield and copying the contents to ./wine/fake_windows/program files/common files/install shield (sorry, don't know the exact path in Wine, I use CVS Wine X). Actually, even if you have XP or something installed, I would still copy those files over (can't work worse than it does now). Having "real" InstallShield files really helps a lot with installers.

5. Are you using KDE? GNOME? Is aRTS (KDE sound server) or esd (GNOME sound server) running when you're trying to run the program? Turn them off and try again (maybe they're using the sequencer).

6. What resolution (bit depth) are you running at? 24 bits is kind of a problem for Wine (because Windows doesn't recognize it as being the same as what it calls 32 bit). You might have better luck running at 16 bits.

That's all I can think of atm, but I've got everything I've tried to install so far under CVS Wine X running these days (except one game that Transgaming broke mouse support for), so hang in there.

Quote:

No, SPWaW doesn't reguire the CD, because it's freely downloadable from the authors website.

2. Which version of Wine are we talking about here (by date)?
Wine 20040309

Quote:

3. Do you have 3D acceleration for your video card (whatever it may be) working?
Yes, I have GF3Ti200 with proberly installed NVIDIA drivers (at least Enemy Territory works fine with them)

Quote:

4. You're emulating Win98, right? What version of Windows do you have installed?
Yes I'm trying to emulate 98. I don't have any windows running on this machine. My other computer has Win2k. I'll try to transfer those Install Shield files from it to the wine's directory...

Quote:

I'm using KDE 3.21 and i have these modules running when using it
Code:

Module                  Size  Used by
nvidia              1605256  -
emu10k1                50404  -

I'm using 1280*1024 (it's the only resolution my LCD display shows proberly) resolution and bit depth is 24b. I'll try if 16b works better.

Thanks for helping!
