Issues booting to dvd or cd

I am having major issues booting to a DVD or CD. I have of course used F12 to pull up the boot menu and I know that the DVD is bootable. Unfortunately, their is more: After using a linux distro for a week I decided to try and compile my own kernel using Gentoo. After two tries I was able to get the kernel to boot and run, but I had screwed up the profile at some point and I decided to take some time and learn more about linux before trying to run through a Gentoo install for a third time. I loaded Ubuntu it booted up and I started the install only to have it crash on me in the middle of the setup. I took a break for the night and in the mourning I discovered I was stuck with the ubuntuu Grub Boot, and it blocked any dvd from booting the drive, even with using the boot menu. I played around with it until I got a root terminal running. Once the terminal was running I decided to start the hardd drive fresh so I Fdisk the drive and deleted all the partions. Ubuntu Grub gone, I decided to try and install Slackware, which is one of the distro I had played around with. I pulled out my disk and no boot. I grabbed my Mint disk and no boot. I opened up Bios removed everything but the DVD and Mint booted, but no Slack.
I decided to do an install of Mint, but it failed with error. This is where I am stuck.. One thing to note is the Gentoo install disk boot without any issue or any modification. This is for a Lenovo T-60.

I did not write it down, and now I cannot get Mint to boot. Of course Gentoo booted up and the live cd kernel loaded no issue.

I am thinking I have corrupted the MBR or did that go down with the old drive map?

UPDATE: Using the Gentoo live cd: I installed the live cd root and used fdisk to create one large partion (which started at 2408), and the ubuntu grub boot loader comes up at reboot. In addition my 80gb hard drive has shrunk by 5gb.

I think I fixed my issue! When I installed Gentoo I used Lilo as my boot loader. When I tired to write over this with Ubuntu (which uses Grub) it corrupted the MBR. I have no idea why Gentoo live cd booted when all others would not, but no matter I used the kernel on the live cd to remove the MBR by typing a command I found online (dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/hda bs=512 count=1), after that I force formatted the hard drive (fsck -f /dev/sda). After all that I rebooted, took out the Gentoo disc, and popped in Mint and it booted from the disc no issues.
