Issue during Apache Config?

Hi,
I have RHEL 4 update 6 running on HP Proliant Server.I am in verse to setup Apache for Accessing my Webpage which has number of Files.
Now these files have been placed under /var/www/html/ebook directory.
I have removed commented lines under <VirtualHost *:80> with ServerName and Document Root ( /var/www/html).
Now I restarted the httpd service and all went fine.
Now I want specific users like roger and alice to access particular directory.
I created .htaccess directory under /var/www/html/ebook as:
Code:
AuthType Basic
AuthName "restrcited webpage"
AuthUserFile "/etc/httpd/conf/.htpasswd"
require valid-user
#Anonymous roger alice
#Anonymous_Authoritative on
~
I too created htpasswd as :
Code:
cd /etc/httpd/conf
htpasswd -cm .htpasswd roger
htpasswd -m .htpasswd alice
Now I restarted the httpd service.
But It simply throws me to the page without asking for username and passwd.
Am i doing anything wrong?

or maybe you should change AllowOverride option in your config from "none" to "all" for specific directory?!
