Issue connecting to linksys wireless network on WPM54G router
 

I am currently trying to connect to my home wireless network. Unable to.

Of importance: My wireless card is a Linksys Compact Wireless-G USB adapter (WUSB54GC)
My router is a Linksys WPM54G running a WPA-Personal Network.
I am running slackware 12.1 and my wireless prog is kwifimanager

So, short story. Installed my USB adapter with ndiswrapper. No issues and both ifconfig and iwconfig show it to be active. In fact, I can access the internet via a neighbors (foolishly) unencrypted network just fine. kwifimanager detects my own home network as well, but the button for "connect to this network" is greyed out. WEP for the network is shown as 'on'.

I attempted to manually log into the network via iwconfig, with no success.
Also attempted to automate the process by modifying the wireless.conf and inet1 files, as per several tutorials. No luck and I have restored those files to default.

I have also noticed that for slackware 12.2 there is a utility called wicd.

So, questions.

1) Is there something fundamental I am missing?
2)Is there a better slack 12.1 network manager, like wicd, that would solve this issue?
3) Is there a better router choice?

Temporarily turn off all security on your router and see if you can connect. If you can, then the problem has been identified as a security issue. WPA and WEP are obviously not the same - you need to be using the same configuration on both router and your wireless NIC.

I never had any luck with kwifimanager. I do all wireless configuration from the command line using iwconfig and ifconfig, and through normal config files.

I've heard positive things about wicd, but have no experience.

network manager not necessary for wusb54gc

You don't need networkmanager for wusb54gc.
I did a post here how to install the necessary driver.

I'm currently using Kubuntu 8.04 (not 8.10 because of nvidia driver problems).

I also tested the live version of Kubuntu 9.04 (at the moment in alpha test), the good news there is that wusb54gc works out of the box, you can make a network connection via grafical interface (on the taskbar) just by selecting your wireless interface (wlan0) and fill in your WPA key.
