ISP won't let me connect with Linux(?)

I'm using a Creative Modem Blaster 56K external modem. No problem with Mandrake 8.0 picking it up. The modem dials, connects and attempts to log on to my ISP (Microsoft Net), but I keep getting the message that "The pppd daemon died unexpectedly." The details window says that the "PAP authentication failed." I tried the other settings (Terminal-Based, CHAP,etc) but the results are always the same. I get disconnected due to my ISP not recognizing my authentication. Make any sense to anybody?

What are you using to dial? kppp? i'd recommend getting wvdial to work ok first. it's very simple to configure, and much morereliable

had that exact modem, i couldn't make it work. replaced it with a us robotics external, with the same settings ,and it worked perfectly

When you say you had that exact same modem and you couldn't make it work, what do you mean by you couldn't make it work? Mine works, it's just that using kppp Microsoft Net drops my authentication request after I connect to the service and I get disconnected. I don't know about you guys, but I can't afford to keep buying modems, or sound cards and printers for that matter as I'm having trouble with them also, until I find one that works. I built this system using parts that the Mandrake hardware guide tested. I'm trying to assume that I'm doing something wrong on my end due to my unfamilararity with Linux. I do want to thank you for your responses and I'm going to try the "wvdial", whatever the hell that is. Any other suggestions are greatly appreciated.

mine would connect, but spend most it's time handshaking/retraining.

Got rid of the Creative Modem Blaster and set up a Zoom V92 external. Had the same problem, but corrected it when I entered in my full address for my ISP instead of my login name as I would in that other OS. Strange, but effective. After I got online, I could go to the CUPS www Administration site and got my printer configured, now if I could get some sound out of my speakers I'd feel real good. Thanks for everyones suggestion.
