ISP speed calculation
I am trying to write a program for my router that will calculate my broadband speed (DN/UP) periodically say every 6 hrs (total of 4/day) and display in the Router "WAN" page. Is there something already out there in Open Source forums (part of GPL etc)?
example: Start a timer, download a file (ftp?) of a known size, stop the timer and then used the time delta and file size to calculate the BW etc?
Any help/suggestion would be greatly appreciated! A sample code would be a great start!

or you could just use one of the many free web pages out there that will do that for you. now it will not be automated, but meh it will give you the info you are seeking.

is what i use as they have a test location less then 8hr (drive time) from my house and it is more accurate then my ISPs speed testing page.

Use wget to download a file of known size and it shows the summary of time and speed after downloading.
