is this possible windows XP + WINDOWS 98+RH9 on a single disk?
 
My friend has windows XP and windows 98 on his PC.he wants to try
installing RH9 on his PC but ain't ready to compromise on any of his existing OSes. can this be done with grub??? HELP me to help him.

Sure it can...

So does the XP and 98 dual doot correctly right now?

What will need to be done first is space need to be made on that drive for the Linux partition, use partition magic or some other equivilent program. (during the RH install, you could also use FDISK to accomplish this)

Once the space is there, when installing RH, make sure that you install it on the new partition and the grub boot loader will load first upon boot, asking you if you want to run Linux or dos, dos will bring you to your windows boot loader.

Its been a while since I have done it, but it was when I was in school and I remember it being pretty easy...

Dont forget to backup your friends existing data (Ghost his drive or something) just in case :)

I did exactly the same. He will have to use partition magic or somthing if he haven't got any unpartitioned space. I'm using GRUB to load either RH or the windows meny he has now.

My brother just installed an application called Virtual PC. It's a Microsoft app so I'm a little leary of it but it seems to work pretty well. Virtual PC allows him to run Windows XP Professional when he boots up, then run Windows Server 2003 in one window and Redhat 9.0 in another window.

He's only been messing with it for a couple weeks, though, so I'm sure it can do more than for what he's using it.

Ive also heard good things about this software.. Never tried it myself though

I had "98,2K,XP,Dedian,Mandrake and Slack on one machine (2- HDDs). The distros did great but I stayed confused all the time.

You can also choose one of the many LiveCD distros around (Knoppix and related or MandrakeMOVE and related) if what he only wants to do is testing GNU/Linux.

After that he can do what is explained above.

Note: Scandisk and defrag your HD before creating a new partition.
