Hi there,

after many years testing and "playing" with download managers I have concluded to two firefox plugins that do the job (actually they do great job) and are free (of course).

flashgot (http://flashgot.net/) and downthemall (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/201)

this combination is a killer trust me !

Specially when you have multiple URL links on a page you wanna download , you select them right click and choose "flashgot selection" .Then flashgot feeds the links to Downthemall and it takes over and downloads them all

It supports also resume of broken downloads ...

try them out and drop me a message if you like them

hope it helps !

For downloading from some famous file hosting sites like rapidshare, you may want to use tucan

http://tucaneando.com/index.html
http://cusl3-tucan.forja.rediris.es

For others, firefox plugin, downthemall is excellent.
For downloading videos, like from youtube, youtube-dl and curl.

Personally, I usually use wget with some scripting, if necessary, to download files. It is much more powerful than any other download manager that I have used.

Hope it helps
