is there a way to see the size of a portion of a file system?

I don't think 'df' accomplishes what I am trying to do.
For example. I have a system with partitions for root, boot, home, and swap. If I wanted to know how much space was being occupied in /var, how could I do that?

If I understand your question correctly, /var is just a directory on the / partition, not a partition itself.

To see the space used by a directory use du, something like this (as root or with sudo on most systems):

Code:
du -ks /var
See man du for various options.
