Lightbulb Is there a list on the web similar to the Hardware Compatibilty List for Windows ?

Hello All.

I am new to this Linux stuff and still finding it hard to find where you can get drivers for a particular piece of hardware Like a printer, or modem etc.

Is there a list out there on the web similar to the Hardware Compatability List for Windows for the various versions of Linux.

It would be good if one was created. that had.

Linux Version | Printer Name and Model | Driver Name | Webpage Link to Download

I am at the moment trying to look for a driver that runs a Lexmark x 1270
for Puppy 4.

In short there quite a few Linux hardware compatibility lists on the web - Google would certainly give you plenty.

Since you are using Puppy I'm assuming you are running a live cd - why don't you try Ubuntu, OpenSUSE or Mandriva live cd instead - I absolutely love Puppy Linux but the ones I mentioned are proper full-featured distros and the chances are you printer will be working without you doing anything.

Hi,

There's no 'global website' for this information. There are some projects that cover a specific slice (linux on laptops, The Linux Foundation to name just 2). There are also HCL lists (HCL = Hardware Compatibility List), like the one right here on LQ.

But Google, as always, is your friend. linux lexmark X 1270 gives back a lot of URL's. Here's one that seems appropriate to your question: OpenPrinting database - Printer: Lexmark x1270 (from the Linux Foundation site mentioned earlier).

Hope this helps.
