A key logger only logs what is typed on the keyboard, not the other end of the conversation. The best kind of key logger is a hardware one that plugs in between the keyboard and the computer.

The only software one I know of is: http://sourceforge.net/projects/lkl

What is it that you hope to learn? Do you suspect that someone is using your computer when you are not around?

If so, try the acct utility. It logs all commands issued by all users (human and application). That means the log file will grow rapidly, and grow quite large. Just start it when you leave your computer, and stop it when you return. Then read the log file.
