Simple question, is OpenSUSE 12.3 with KDE 4.8 good for gaming and watching HD videos? I remember hearing that after 4.10 KDE started being less resource heavy but before that it wasnt. In KDE 4.8, does it disable compositing on fullscreen windows?
(I like Ubuntu but I do not like the Unity bar, I don't like Linux Mint too much either as its sort of just too much grey)
i was a gnome fan , because of gnome 3 I moved over to KDE4 .
at first i did not care for kde 4 , being a long time user of kde 2 and 3
but kde4 is growing on me .
Just turn off most of the "eye candy" and it should be fine .The only "eye candy" i leave on is the basic
"highlight glow" on the top window( i like the look of it ) and the "slide" for the 4 virtual desktops
as i type this i am only using just over 15% of my 8 gigs of ram for the whole system as i type this in Seamonkey on kde4
Unity was pretty good, screen tearing on Firefox and Minecraft but no screen tearing when watching movies/playing other games. I tried Linux Mint MATE and it had screen tearing (one line) when watching movies but none when playing games. (A bit on minecraft, also on Firefox). I am going to give Linux Mint XFCE a try and if that doesn't work (screen tearing) I will try Fedora/Opensuse. I ran all of my games/movies in fullscreen. The part that saddens me is XFCE 4.10 has the best performance when compared to KDE 4.10 and GNOME SHELL 3.8 yet it has screen tearing on Firefox. Those two are actually the worst for gaming also. I come from Windows where everything works/has best performance so I need something very up to par. The things that draw me back from other distros are
1. Skype
2. Spotify
3. Steam (Ive had horrible experience with Steam on Fedora 19, crashes due to SELinux)
