Is mplayer0.91-2pl good?
 

Because I have had a lot of problem trying to install mplayer1.03 ,because of dependencies.I just have found 0.91(my Mdk9.1 came with mplayer0.90)
packege for Mdk9.1.with win 32 codecs.
So if I install more codecs like realcodecs etc.and plugin for browser.
Is this good enough to watch real time movies?

....real time movies are those you can watch on the internet correct?

i installed mdk 9.2 and installed mplayer that comes with the mdk packages, i was unable to watch online stream, i was unable to listen radio, i was unable to watch some of the xvid format, and very some of the vid format. i don't know why.

so.... i got so pissed off, and i deleted that bullshit rpm and install mplayer from source, now i'm able to do all that cool stuff =D

moral of the story? install from source, it may be pain, but its good experience and very rewarding heheh

MPlayer is an excellent media player, but probably not a good thing to start with if you're still posting to the newbie forum :eek:

I would reccoment using Xine. Although Xine ultimately cannot play all the formats MPlayer can, it has been able to play virtually everything I've wanted to see. In addition to ease of use, Xine has "skinnable" frontends, including stuff for Gnome and KDE - and even a console-based framebuffer video player.

Oh, and did I mention plugins? Lots of fun plugins for Xine. And Xine plugins play DVDs.

Xine cannot play quicktime, Win32 stuff, and RealStuff by default. You can, however, download those codecs (some of which are available at MPlayer's site) and put them in a directory where Xine can find them (i.e. /usr/lib/Win32) and voila! Xine will automagically use those codecs to play quicktime, Win32, and realplayer files.

I have had some trouble with the Sorenso 3 video codec (aka quicktime) in Xine, most notably with the Matrix trailers. But newer and older trailers in Sorenso 3 play just fine, so I'm thinking it's just a fluke. Otherwise, I've been able to play just about anything in Xine without trouble.

Noatun and kaboodle, which are often bundled with Gnome or KDE, are nice... but not nearly as powerful as MPlayer or Xine. XMMS is the way to go for audio. Ultimately your choice of media/audio/video player will be a matter of pesonal preference.

You don't *need* a browser plugin for Xine; Xine will play video's just fine without one. If you want one - and they are convenient - install the gxine ui, which comes with a browser plugin. There may be other browser plugins for xine, but I don't know about them offhand.

Netscape and Mozilla share plugins. For example, your shockwave flash plugin was written for Netscape and is useable in Mozilla while your pdf plugin was written for Mozilla but is useable in Netscape.

My guess is yes, the gxine plugin will work in Netscape. But I've never tried it, so I can't make any guarantees. Why are you using something as old/slow as Netscape when there are so many excellent alternatives available?

Because with Netscape I can have free imap/smtp account. and I could not copy the account into mozilla.
Also using mozilla and Netscape at the same time caused crash,and mozilla color turned

Mozilla looks a lot like Netscape anyway. This could be normal.

That's unusual. The two browsers should be mutually unaware of each other. You could also try using Opera, Mozilla-Firebird, Epiphany, or Konqueror in lieu of Mozilla if Mozilla is causing trouble.

IMAP/SMTP don't require a specific web-browser for access. Perhaps you could fool Netscape into thinking you use their browser by opening it once a day and doing your normal browsing with something else?

There are plenty of free POP3/IMAP/SMTP services besides Netscape - services that don't require you to use a specific browser. Plus you are running Linux, so you could set up your own mail server ;) .

Well Netscape 7.1 looks diferent from mozilla,it is blue and buttons are different.
and actually 7.1's side bar was gone when I started the browser for 2nd or 3rd time.
Also the free imap account is set probably unusual.
I could configure other free pop mail account like nettaxi(which offers only pop3 and no
smtp)or softhome(no inbox account for free users)
But I could not do the samething with Netscape7.1's account(then I think outlookexpress
users can copy it in stead of using netscape?....I don't know).
So I am using free unlimited no ad internet provider and Netscape7.1.
I used opera browser and was no problem,I did not like the free virsion.
