GNOME in Suse does have an option to choose either KDE or GNOME. However, when I specified KDE and rebooted GNOME came up = i.e. no effect. This is what lead me to belive (and inquire about) that I might not have everything installed that I would need.
Install kdebase and other KDE packages you need using YAST. Once thats done, log out and you should have KDE in your Login manager sessions.

Being a newbie myself, I have to ask this question. Have you tried to log out of your session and then log back in using KDE? My guess is that you have the auto boot enabled so that it will always boot up the selected window manager. Just as a side light, there are several other window managers out there like Window Maker, ICEwm and some others that I can't remember. I hope this helps.

DEANAL i just read ur post , u earlier mentioned htat
after installing KDE u rebooted and system went STRAIGHT TO GENOME
does this mean it didnot even ask for username and password ???.... if yeah then ur AUTO-LOGIN is enabled so either u disable that so u get screen to ask for username + pwd or end session of genome (cant say how u do it in genome ) then re-login after entering username + pwd and SELECTING KDE as ur DESKTOP ENVIRONMENT
