Is it possible to format HDDs /fix MBRs using a LiveCD?

I've playing about with lots of different distros (Ubuntu, SuSE, Xubuntu, and lastly Slackware 10.2) just installing them onto an older Toshiba Satellite Pro laptop, having a look to see which I prefer, and then installing a new one.

I have run into a problem trying to replace Slackware 10.2. I hoped to put SuSE back on for a work project, but something has gone awry with the boot.

LiLO starts, only looks to an older (I think) section, then hangs, forcing a reboot. My gut feeling is that I have messed up the mbr.

Is it possible to fix this using a Xubuntu or SuSE liveCD?

The MBR will be replaced when you install SuSE on the machine, as it needs to install it's own bootloader anyway. Just boot the machine to the SuSE CD, bypassing LILO altogether, and install as you normally would.
