Is fantasy wallpaper safe on Linux desktop?

I have found fantasy wallpaper sites. But they are not linux sites so i am wondering if they are safe or can insert malware into Linux.

One of the sites:

The wallpapers are image files. No problem.

the website loads with all ad-, request- and script-blocking enabled.
so no problem there, either.

Very occasionally there will be a bug in an image library meaning that bad things can be done with picture files but these things come along rarely and can be implementation-specific so I feel the threat level is fairly low. I'm not sure there's been an exploit for Linux either.

Thanks for this security tip but I am not getting any choices for compression (as I do in Win) when I right click on the pic. How would I go about compressing them, please?

Do I need to install a special zip app for compression? I checked out a pgm called caesium.sourceforge.net. Does LM already something in program manager?

There seems to be something here
http://community.linuxmint.com/tutorial/view/548
This tutorial requires to already have downloaded the file to desktop.

In software mgr I see "webp", lossy compression for digital photos.

LM should have something preinstalled but the name escapes me at the moment, and I'm not at my PC to check.

Are you right clicking on the desktop or in a file manager? If you are attempting to do it from the desktop, open a file manager and try it. I always get an option to compress when right clicking in a file manager.

I think you would have to download them by using "save as" or similar in your browser, then find them in the file manager and compress them. That should be perfectly safe as you're not actually opening them -- with data files it's opening them with a flawed program which causes the issues. Again though I should point out that issue with bugs in image libraries which cause compromises are extremely rare so not much of a worry.
