Is Backtrack4 Similar To Fedora?
 

Hi,

I dont know whether this question is worth askin here or not,neways my friend suggested me to install an o.s called Backtrack4,which basically consist of tools such as metasploit,nmap etc since i am interested in knowing and improving my knowlege on such programs,BUT what stops me from installing backtrack4 is that i am bothered whether the commands that work in redhat/fedora(yum,grep,ps,etc) will work in backtrack4??Is Backtrack one of the distros of linux?

No question is silly/lame to ask - as long as its asked with sufficient info/politely :)

Regarding BackTrack, its really different to Fedora - have a look at http://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=backtrack

Its an Ubuntu/Debian based distro versus Fedora which is an rpm based distro. Thus things like package management especially works very differently.

As alli_yas stated, there are no lame or stupid questions. In addition to alli_yas's post, the general daily maintenance tasks like starting and stopping services, creating startup links (checkconfig vs. update-rc.d) and others differ significantly between RPM based (RedHat, Fedora, CentOS) and DEB based distros (Debian, Ubuntu, Linux Mint).

So if you want to get started learning the utilities (A LOT) that come with BackTrack you should first get a bit acquainted with 'the Debian way'. If you only want to learn the utilities, you can install them in Fedora too if you prefer sticking with RPM based to not have to change your habits.

But will all the pentest programs work in Fedora12? i would be really gratefull towards you ,if you could tell me on how or atleast the site to install the rpms for All those programs .

Hello,

I don't know if you'll find RPMs for all the utilities used in BackTrack but if they don't provide RPM then I'm sure you can download the source code and compile that. I don't know if there's a full list of all the included utilities. Maybe this site can help you on your way. It shows how to install the BackTrack Tools on Ubuntu. Who knows you can find it for Fedora.

Eric is right - maybe you can find a version for Fedora.

I've done a bit of research and can't find any concrete rpm based distro built for penetration testing (like BackTrack is).

Backtrack 3 is based on Slax.
Backtrack 4 on Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid.

i googled a lot and the result is i did not find the programs or rpm's that are similar to backtrack4 programs, neways the best option would be to install backtrack4 O.s :( :(

BackTrack4 is a really good pen testing distro only. I say that because it is not meant for eye candy or anything else, just strictly for pen testing. This comes from the mindset of http://www.offensive-security.com/
If you want to know how to use BackTrack and serious about learning, I would suggest going here http://www.backtrack-linux.org/ and going through the forums. The forum members can be a little..umm..harsh, so browse for what you are looking for before posting any questions.

There is also a new distro based on the latest Ubuntu called GnackTrack.
The developer tries to stick as close to BackTrack as possible but using Gnome instead of KDE 3.5 http://www.gnacktrack.co.uk/

If you would like to look at some other options I would suggest NST http://www.networksecuritytoolkit.org/nst/index.html Which is Fedora based.
Another one you can check out http://www.livehacking.com/ Which is Ubuntu based.
