Can anyone point me to the right info how to start on Ns2 at all please

What have you done/tried?? A good starting point for ANYTHING is to read the instructions....you can also check Google. Just putting in "how to run ns2 on ubuntu" pulls up lots:

Which command are you using ?

'mpls' should be part of ns2 since ns-2.28, I think.
