Is a linux-swap partition necessary in Puppy 4.1.2? Would it boost performance? 512MB ram, 18GB hd

If you're going to run memory-intensive applications, you may think about it. However, swap does not boost performance. In fact, it lowers performance when is used. So my advice will be to go without it.

You can always use Gparted to resize your partition later to add swap if you find you need it.
