Is 4.47 gig too big to burn?

Hi Guys,
I decided to install for my first Linux " Linux XP. It really looked a cool setup. But when I tried to burn the iso it was to large at 4.47 to burn. Could anyone give me advice on this little problem, please.

Lucky.

A "normal" DVD-r is 4.7 gig (and usually a little more).

How are you trying to burn it?

smoker 08-30-2010 02:00 PM

4.47 may be too large. I've always found a safe limit to be 4.3GB, but see this post.

Would anybody put out a distro on an .iso that was too big to burn? I doubt it. Try using ImgBurn.

I thought the best way to burn it was with " Infrared Recorder Program ". But if you think I can do it with Image Burn, I will try that.

I need it on a Disc in order to install it on a seperate Hard drive.

Cheers Guys.

I tried Imageburn and this message came up. Not enough room on disk. Disc size 2.298,496= 4489. To burn Linux Xp = 2348, 103 sectors = 4586. So, how on earth am I supposed to burn this to a disc. Just remember I am a Noob and some things are not easy to understand. Laugh, and That is before I even get to try linux. Ah well, any advice would be appreciatted.
Lucky

4.7 GB = 4.337 GiB (but I've honestly never seen a DVD tha couldn't do +4.4 GiB).

@Luckyjfl
If it's really 4.47 GiB, it might indeed be too big (some dvd-r's might be bigger though).

I would advise getting shot of Linux XP and getting a free distro. Did you realise they have a 30 day limit on it ?
Linux XP is based on fedora anyway, so why not try that ?

I have seen no sign of the GPL on their site either.

brianL 08-30-2010 03:02 PM

Yeah, smoker's right, there's a lot of better distros you can try. Ubuntu, Mint, dozens of them. All free. All fit on a CD or DVD.

Luckyjfl 08-30-2010 03:04 PM

Brill Guys, you have opened my eyes here. I did not realise that Linux xp was only a 30 day limit, so bye bye that one. I will give Fedora a go or Unbuntu.

Thank you again, for your help.

Lucky.

Try a few, 'til you find one that suits you.

i would vote up fedora. they created a straightforward live-usb creator (i didnt even know they still made computers with cd-rom drives). ubuntu and others are able to boot from a usb but thru a 3rd-party tool (unetbootn).

Did you try any of the latest Ubuntu releases? It's called usb-creator-gtk and it automatically gets installed as part of the standard desktop package. I think it can be ran from the livecd, too.

^ thanks, I was unaware.

recently I have been just doing stuff like this to create a live-usb (takes like 10 minutes -- depending on speed of your processor):
Code:

dd if=fedora-12-x86-64.iso of=/dev/sda
