Many different versions of the ipod will not work with Linux.

The following link is a list of compatible ipods. Now this site is to install linux on a ipod. Something you are probably not interested in. However, it is still a good site to determine if linux can access your ipod.

A good ipod program is gtkpod

I played with Gtxpod for a while. It's usable.

Just be leery with the iPod if you came from a mac. I had issues with one that was used on a mac in the past.
