IP Release and Renew?

Hi!, Does anyone here know how to release and renew IP address under linux? I tried
#ifconfig eth0 release & ifconfig eth0 renew, I also tried "up" and "down" with no results. What am I doing wrong? (Distribution: Fedora Core 3)

normally, I just do:

Code:
dhclient eth0
Replacing 'eth0' with the appropriate adapter alias.

I would go with
Code:
ifdown eth0
followed by
Code:
ifup eth0
as root. I see you said you tried up and down in your post, so if that doesn't do the trick, maybe you did eth0 and should have done eth1? Release and renew I believe are unique to Redmond's TCP/IP stack, so I would be very suprised if those worked under linux.

Peace,

You could also restart the network service:

As root run this command: /etc/init.d/network restart

Thanks for the reply, I am now able to get a new ip via bash instead of going into the gui network thing.
