Unhappy just a small idea

I'am also just a newbie but i have an idea:
Just trie the following at you console:
ifconfig > myip.txt
this should write the actuall ip configuration in a file colled myip.txt if you now open the file in any editor there should be an line like : ippp inet addr: .....
there will be some more info in this file but you just need this row. then you can edit a cron job to build this file every x houres and an other cron job to send you a mail!
I haven`t tried this a all, but it should work.
Please tell my if it does!
