ION 330 nVidia driver wont run
 

Hello all.

First post in a Linux forum, so please be gentle!:banghead:

I have an Ubuntu x64 9.04 distro that I have installed on an ION 330 nettop. I have downloaded the latest driver from nVidia (to the desktop) and I have tried to install using synaptic package manager, terminal and by the old 'double clicking' the file; I still can't get it to install.

I have used the 'sudo' command in terminal, to try to get it to run as root, to no avail.

I really want to stick with Ubuntu on this little machine, as Windows 7 & Vista seem so much slower on it, despite 4GB RAM and a 7200 rpm 500GB HDD.

I have read through the forum, but I can't seem to find/identify a solution to my cack handed attempt to run this great little distro.

Any ideas/experiences to share??

What are the errors while installing? In synaptic there are two packages that took my sight and could be useful.
nvidia-common and nvidia-settings.

usually, after clicking or ticking the chosen software to install (it will not install by double-clicking) you will see a button at the top left-center named "Apply" click it and wait until synaptic has fully installed it. Usually it will take longer waiting if the internet connection is slow, synaptic downloads the software from sources then auto-installs it.

Again:
Click "Apply"
then Wait..........

I use openSUSE but...

The process of installing the Nvidia drivers from the distribution repositories is different from that of installing the driver downloaded directly from Nvidia.

Reading your post, it seems that you have followed Windows practice and downloaded from Nvidia. If you wish to proceed in that way, you can read this README.

The process involves, as "sudo" using the terminal command "init 3" to enter the console mode and stop the X window manager, logging in as user, becoming "sudo" again, and entering the command "sh NVIDIA-Linux-...pkg2.run", after which the driver installer should start. Google and the many Ubuntu sites will giver you more details.

It might be easier for you to install the driver from inside Ubuntu using Synaptic, but linux gives you choices if nothing else. Here also, there is help online.

This is indeed the route I chose, as the package manager did not offer an apparrently suitable option. I will give it a shot tonight. Thanks for your responses guys.
