thanks for all of your assistance---i figured it out. i went into CTRL + R then selected virtual disk, changed the settings to RAID 10 for RAID, selected all of the disk (needed 8 total); went into the advanced settings and changed to adaptive read ahead and now the disks are formatting.

No problem gmvdburg, I work with a lot of servers and Dells I have more then a fair bit of experience with, but the R710 is a bit too new for me to really get to play around with yet. Perhaps sometime soon, who knows.
