internet x 3?

I have just installed Mandrake 9.0 and I thought I had configured the internet connection but when I was through with the installation, I opened up Mozilla and nothing occurred. Sorry to sound (or type) stupid, but how do I make sure I am configured to my ISP and make sure that my mail is correct so that I may connect? Also, I thought I have to connect with a terminal or that X Terminal right?
I spent all night installing it and IT IS GORGEOUS! The screen loooks "cleaner" than Windoze.
All the help is much appreciated.

What kind of connection do you have? Modem, (A)DSL, something different? Please post also results of two console commands (you need to open a terminal, for example Konsole and be root - type su and then root password when it askes you): route and ifconfig. When you have a terminal and you're root, just run
route
ifconfig
and copy the results.

Whooo-boy! Did I leave out ALOT of details! I am sorry.
I connect using an external modem with a "9" dial out property.
I am using KDE 3.0 (came with it).
So I go into root and go into "Konsole" and type "su"?
Anything else?
This is on a single computer with a partition. Should I have installed the server packages?

Mara 07-11-2003 08:28 AM

No, just 'su' and it'll ask you for password. Type root's one. Then 'route' and 'ifconfig'.

a_m_flash 07-11-2003 08:31 AM

Ok, in "Konsole", type "su" then roots password, then "route", then "ifconfig"?
This would connect me?

Mara 07-11-2003 08:37 AM

No, it will show your current state. And help to find why you're not connected.

Thank you! I am at work right now and will check it later but I appreciate your help and your paitience.
Should I expect anything? Will it be easy to config as it was in install?

Mara 07-11-2003 08:47 AM

It should not be hard. When you have the result, you can also run 'kppp' program (from the menus). Check if you can connect using it.

BTW I fon't know what "external modem with a "9" dial out property". If it's important, what does it mean?

a_m_flash 07-11-2003 09:08 AM

It is a modem outside my system case (RS232) and the "9" is like a code for businesses or hotels to dial "outside" of the building network phone line before you dial the actual number. I hope I got it right. I think for you it is something different.
Also, would it be easy to fix my connection in Konsole? Any commands I need to know?

Mara 07-11-2003 10:28 AM

You can try to connect from GUI. Most people use kppp program (should be installed in you system). What you need to give it is the number to dial (with your code to get outside), or maybe it's already here (if entered during installation). Just try it, it may work first time you do it.

Hey Mara, You were right. everything was fine. I had to literally connect to the internet by actually dialing up. LOL
KPPP is cool. So was Konsole.
I thank you for your help and I hope you dont mind I added you to my buddy list. Until next time.
