internet doesn't work
 

hi guys
I am using RHEL 4.0 ws when i tried to connect to internet message appears "www.<name of website>.com could not be found.Please check the name and try again" while my modem is working properly as is evident that i am able to connect with net in windowsxp in the same system . i also tried settings in preferences in edit menu of firefox but nothing works .So i need help

You probably need to add nameservers to /etc/resolv.conf. From your windows box, go to the command line and type ipconfig /all partway down should be line that says "DNS servers" and there should be like 3 IP addresses there. Write down the numbers.

Then in linux, edit /etc/resolv.conf and add a line for each IP address. Should look like nameserver XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX where the x's are the IP address.
