Internet Connection Problem via proxy

I just installed red hat 9 two days ago, everything works great except for the internet. I am using the internet connection via university which require to setup the proxy server. After I setup all the configuration, I try to surf the net using mozilla but it says access denied. However, the AOL works fine but not the browser. I had try mozilla and opera, they both give the same error.
This is the first time I use linux machine and I don't know what to do! Could you please help me!
Thank you so much!!!

yes this is sound advice. Also shutdown firewalls until you have resolved the issue.

What connection is it? Dial up, cable, ADSL? What interface is it? I'm assuming it's cable and the interface is an ethernet card. If so, what did you do to install the ethernet card? You said the AOL works. Does that mean the AOL browser under windows?
