Hi,

Okay, assuming that your setup is somewhat like mine (PC wired to a modem that has an internal IP address), I'd go about it like this:
- enter the consiole
- enter super user mode
- issue the ifconfig command

Quote:
ifconfig eth0 [IPaddrsss of choice] netmask 255.255.255.0 broadcast 192.168.1.255 up
- set the routing to the IP address of the modem (check the IP address of the modem)

Quote:
route add default gw 192.168.1.1
- set the nameservers

Quote:
cd /etc
nano resolv.conf
and enter the nemeservers of your provider, this, for example, is the Belgacom server
Quote:
nameserver 195.238.2.21
enter the IP address of your provider

- test:

Quote:
ping www.google.com
you should get a response, and no packet loss

Let us know where this eagle did a splat-down

Thor

Doesnt Ubuntu have a DHCP client? Wouldn't it be better to tell him how to config it?

(wouldn't the nameserver be negotiated during the process of getting the IP address?)
