internet connection over LAN

hi guys,

my system is one of the nodes in LAN in my office. the problem is that i am not able to connect to the internet via this LAN although the LAN server distributes the internet to all the nodes. rest all nodes are windows nodes. my linux is fully configured for LAN and i get appropriate replies when i ping the local server.

but on the other hand i am unable to open any website on the internet e.g. even www.yahoo.com (and even other popular websites). when i ping yahoo or hotmail or anyother site it says the host is unreachable. my ethernet card is configured and is activated. my local host and server IP addresses are also OK. i dont know where the problem lies.
kindly help.

i use Red Hat 9. i am a new linux user.

thanking you,

aman

how is your firewall set up on your linux box and is there a firewall/router on the computer that is *directly* connected to the internet?

i dont think there is a firewall setup that wud stop my internet usage because all other nodes are accessing the internet successfully.

and as far as my linux is concerned i dont know how to check the firewall here. if u cud help me. maybe my firewall is preventing me from internet connectivity.

thnx a lot

gnome menu - (where the windows start menu used to be) then system settings then security level - it will ask you for your root p/w so type it in - now i wouldnt usally suggest this - but you will need to disable the firewall and then see if you can get an internet site - whatever the outcome make sure you turn it back on and we will work from there
