Internet connection on Oracle Enterprise Linux

I just installed Oracle Enterprise Linux 5.x on my laptop from an iso file. But I cannot browse internet from firefox (tried to connect internet from a wire connection), and cannot ping a website. Any suggestions?

Why did you chose Oracle? It's rather obscure, though I understand it's a derivative RedHat Enterprise Linux. Unless there's a specific reason you want Oracle Enterprise Linux then you might be better off with something more commonly used like openSUSE or Ubuntu.

Anyway, do you have a network connection configured at all? What's the output of

Code:
/sbin/ifconfig

I think the GUI tool to configure the network in RedHat is

Code:
system-config-network
so maybe it's the same in Oracle.

In these situations it's a good idea to list what you have already done to attempt to solve the problem before you posted so people don't suggest stuff you already tried.

Here is the result for
ifconfig

lo Link encap:Local Loopback

inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0

inet6 addr: ::1/128 Scope:Host

UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:16436 Metric:1

RX packets:2660 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0

TX packets:2660 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0

collisions:0 txqueuelen:0

RX bytes:6673232 (6.3 MiB) TX bytes:6673232 (6.3 MiB)

Also "system-config-network" works. I need to find out how to config it.

I am very new to linux network and the reason I choose Oracle Enterprise Linux is because I can download from company's website.

So you don't have a network connection set up at all. You need to configure one with system-config-network.

With RedHat Enterprise you do not get updates unless you have a subscription. I would assume the same is true for Oracle Enterprise Linux. Do you have a license for Oracle? Do you know you can get updates? If not, then running Oracle is not sensible.

The closest free distro to Oracle would be Fedora. http://fedoraproject.org/

Oracle "Unbreakable" Linux is basically RHEL with a couple of custom modifications for running Oracle DB Enterprise Edition. Unless you're running Oracle DB EE, you'd be better off running RHEL or CentOS (or Fedora if you want the most up to date). These are just as commonly used as openSUSE or Ubuntu.

thanks arizonagroovejet and alli_yas.

I can get update for Oracle enterprise linux. For some reason OEL cannot detect network card. I reinstall Fedora and the internet part works.
