You need to help us first..........

What Ethernet/wireless device(s) are in that laptop??? Use the typed command /sbin/lspci -v to let us know. Only post the portions about your Ethernet/Network controller(s), you may have two one wired and one wireless.

Example from my laptop;
Code:
06:01.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL-8139/8139C/8139C+ (rev 10)

06:02.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4318 [AirForce One 54g] 802.11g Wireless LAN Controller (rev 02)

Then please check the contents of the /etc/modprobe.conf file, do you see a line that looks like;

alias eth0 <something>

Also try tying ifconfig and report the output.

The manuals (the System Administration Guide) for CentOS explain how to setup/configure a PPPoE connection;

http://www.centos.org/docs/4/

For the wireless inteface you will want to follow this about setting up and using the dkms-ndiswrapper;
