Internet connection in some linux distros
 

Here is my problem:
My main OS is Vista Home Premium which I use for my work.
I run various Linux distros from DVDs that I had downloaded as ISO images.
Windows is just bad - memory management is just terrible but it has some good programs and games.
Back to Linux - I have problem in some Linux distros with internet connection i.e. no internet connection at all although it shows it is connected to the internet and gives me IP address and all relevant information in status bar.
Open SUSE and Fedora - no problems at all and rock solid - like them very much but problem is they come without flash so it takes abt 10 minutes to download them and as I run them from DVDs I have to do it every time so it is time consuming.
Linux Mint, Mandriva, Kubuntu and BackTrack Linux show me that I have internet connection, internet icon gives me all relevant information but when I open Konqueror or Firefox it gives me no internet connection page.
I noticed when my IP address is 72.xxx or 74.xxx it does not work but I do not have any problems with internet connection when my IP address is 62.xxx or 64.xxx - in that case both Konqueror and Firefox work properly.
My internet connection is provided by Bellsouth.net(AT&T) it is dynamic so it changes.
What is the problem?
Has IP number anything to do with it?
One more question real quick:
Is it possible to transfer ISO image from DVD to USB flash drive not as ISO image but as OS - same as it would be in hard drive but without going to hard drive first - can i extract ISO image as OS directly from DVD to USB flash drive? I would like to extract Linux Mint or openSUSE to USB flash drive.:confused:
If it is possible can you give me link for the web page where that is explained.

I know you said you wanted Mint or openSUSE, but I think Fedora is worth looking at. Its simple to create a USB live environment that you can read and write to and they even have a GUI tool for Windows and Linux users to help with the process. The detailed instructions are available here.

Flash or USB Drive
 

There is a great website that has tutorials on installing various distros to a USB flash drive. This might be something you are interested in:

Also, you may want to take a look at Mepis. It is a Debian live distro and has great documentation on installing a portable USB flash install:

You can download the CD, and use the Mepis GUI scripts from the menu to see if Mepis can automatically configure your LAN or wireless connection. Currently, the stable release is 7.0, but Mepis 8.0 is awaiting Debian Lenny to become stable on February 14th, and will finalize their stable release shortly there after. The latest Mepis 8.0 RC3 should be stable enough to use to test out:

I use Debian and Mandriva (and OpenSUSE in the past) on a USB hard drive (Maxtor mini 3) that I have configured to change the xserver-xorg configuration during boot so that I can just plug it into any computer with a USB slot and have my system with me wherever I go. In order to boot the USB drive, you normally have to change the boot order in the bios of the computer you are using, but I get around that by using a custom grub boot CD that allows me to simply boot a computer from the CD, and then select the USB drive. I chose this method because of several forums I have read indicatiing that USB flash drives have a tendency to burn up prematurely if you must read and write to the USB frequently. This probably wouldn't be much of a problem with a pendrive install of DSL or Puppy since the entire system is loaded to RAM. If you are interested in this method, I can help you with it.
