Internet connection in rhel5

I have installed rhel5 in my vmware workstation. Could anyone tell me how to connect the internet in my rhel5? i have window 7 on which vmware is installed.

this isn't anythign to do with redhat. the virtualiszation handles the network connectivity and just presents an virtual ethernet devices and DHCP. if your host is working correctly and you've selected the right network setup then it will just work. what type of networking are you using? are you getting an IP on the host?

Note that you can't install "vmware". vmware is a company, not a product... is this player? server? workstation? esx? esxi?

I have installed vmware workstation.
i have changed the linux ip address by using the system-config-network command in graphical mode. and in turn i have also changed the vmware network adapter vmnet1. bt still i cannot connect the net. what to do now??
could you please give a step by step instruction on what should i do??

Your VMWare network adapter settings need to be Bridged or NAT-ed (I don't have VMware, I use virtualbox) to let the Virtual host access outside world (internet).
Then inside Virtual machine I can manually configure Network adapter address or let it DHCP (because my router has it) and it works

good luck

why would you change the linux ip address/ what did you change it from or to???

sasuke 09-18-2011 01:31 PM

i think bridge connection won't solve it. because that need an external lan connection. but here in this case i am using inside my window. so my present connection type is set to nat(it is one of the vmware workstation settings).

previously the ipaddress was blank i changed it to one of class A ip address. i thought i needed it to connect it the internet i need to give it an ipaddress. that's why i changed it. did i do it wrong?? then what should i do now??

acid_kewpie 09-18-2011 01:43 PM

as above, you should not needed to have done ANYTHING under rhel. workstation will provide addresses on a NAT networking layout, AFAIR. this is a purely 100% Workstation config issue.

so what i am supposed to do now?? is there any way to restore the tampered settings??

acid_kewpie 09-18-2011 02:31 PM

you can just delete the ifcfg-eth0 file in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts, i'd probably also delete the vmnic reboot it and let it come up without a nic, then readd it and reboot.
