Internet connection


The fire-fox web browser won't work. I have a broad band connection, but it work fine with windows o/s. Do I need to set up or configure this problem.LQ Newbie

My system run Slackware v.13.37 at terminal- I run 1).- it does not show eth0 , eth1, show only lo. so run 2).- it said ping: unknown host google.com and 3).-I plugged directly to the modem and 4).-Ethernet connection.I also test run Ubuntu in the same computer - no any problem at all, we can surf website.

I see you are running Ubuntu, so let's do some diagnostics.

1) Is your network card detected by your operating system? Running ifconfig in a terminal will list the detected network interfaces and their configuration. The one named "lo" is your loopback interface and should be ignored. If it's the only one you have listed, your network card has not been detected.

2) Run the following command in a terminal:

ping -c4 google.com
This will basically try to ping google.com, to test if you're getting outside internet.

3) Are you plugged directly into the modem? If you are, and you had a different device plugged in, have you tried rebooting the modem? A lot of times DSL/Cable modems tie themselves to a single device, and no other device will connect directly to the modem unless the modem is rebooted.

4) How are you connected? (Ethernet or Wireless)

Let us know what you find out.

Are you seeing the network manager on the top bar, if so click on it & select your network.

i have NO IDEA what you are doing or have installed ?

slack leet
windows ? what 7,vista,xp,me,...
ubuntu? what 11.04,10.10,10.04 ?

what is your connection ?
a wired cable ?
wireless ?
