Internet connection

Hey guys How do i get my wireless working in ubuntu 8.10. I know this is a pretty broad question and maybe better answered somewhere else but i have no idea what domain names hosts ip addresses etc... are. I apologize for my ignorance but i Thank all of your for your invaluable help. BTW I hav an Atheros 802.11 wireless lan card. Dont know if that helps at all and it is enabled. Im not that ignorant. Thanks you guys

This is a stab in the dark... but you might have a look on your wireless router for something called DHCP and enable it. Once that's done, enable your wireless to use DHCP and with a lot of luck, you'll be surfing. If not, we'll need more info.

You'll also need to setup a WAP password on your wireless router and do the same on your wireless client.

Oh man... well i don't see any dhcp thing. I get online at my friends house and i don't want to mess with his stuff. Is there a better distro for compatiblity because I really want linux but im not as tech savvy as i need to be i guess. What kind of info do you need though? Ill be happy to give you as much as possible you just have to tell me what you need and where to get it.

So, just to get things straight, you can get on wireless somewhere else, just not at your place?

Are you using any encryption in either location?

If not, I agree with eco, DHCP is a possible...

No i live really far back in the country and i cant get high speed internet. Im saying that my friends houses are the only place i can get on the internet and their parents are kind of anal about me messing with any hardware of theirs. Which i fully understand ... i dont make the payments... is there another way that doesnt involve messing with their router only my comp... Also is there another distro that perhaps supports atheros ? Thanks for the help guys

Well, it's not going to be easy if you don't have basic knowlege of networking but what you can always do is find out how their computer connects to the internet and go from there.

If they are not using DHCP, then it's a fixed ip address and network settings.

You need to get the basics under your belt before you'll get it to work.

Good luck!
