Internet Connection

We purchased a used laptop that has debian. This is the first time I have heard of it. It has Iceweasel (Mozilla). When I try to pull up anything it gives me a message "Server not found". I don't know what I need to do.

Hello, and welcome to LQ!
Are you by any chance connected to the Internet? We have to start somewhere.

Ok, great, but are you connected to the internet on this specific laptop, that runs Debian?

Do you have an icon somewhere in/on your desktop that looks something like this:

What happens when you click on it?

I am terribly sorry, but in order to help we need to know more.
- What _do_ you have on your desktop?
- What does it look like?
- If you have an application menu somewhere, there is normally a menu called "About" or similar, what does it say?

We say we need more information, we refer to information such as
  • The make/model of the laptop
  • The type of connection you are using, wired or wireless (if you are using wireless, try testing with a wired connection).
  • If wireless, what wireless chipset is installed (you can find this information by running the command lspci in a terminal or command window; the network adapters will be part of the output of the command.)

The more information you provide, the easier it will be for others to help you. Here are some hints about how to ask a good question at LQ. http://www.linuxquestions.org/linux/...Ask_a_Question

As an aside, Iceweasel is just Firefox under a different name.

And welcome to the forum.

Hello and welcome to the forum

We'll first need some information on your adapters. Please open a terminal and post the exact results of these commands...

Code:
lspci -nnk | grep -i net -A2
Code:
lsmod
Code:
iwconfig
Code:
ifconfig -a
Code:
rfkill list
Please note that Debian may require you to preface these commands using "sudo" or "su". Be careful as the above allows root or superuser access to your system and mistakes could end up damaging or destroying your operating system!

Also, as asked above, how are you connecting to the internet? Via ethernet or wireless?

Regards...

Hokiebonnie,

Have you tried connecting this laptop to your router via an ethernet cable and then clicking on Iceweasel?

If this works then it is just a matter of getting your wifi to work.

Please supply frankbell and ardvark71 with the info they requested.
