Internet connection
 

I aquired a version of Linux Mandrake 6.0 PowerPack Ed. I'm having no luck at connecting to the Internet.

I'm pretty sure I've got my account information set up properly in Kppp and Netscape. When I go to connect, a screen saying "initializing modem" comes on and nothing happens from there. I'm using an external 3Com/USRobotics 56K Faxmodem. I don't know if this modem is compatable with Linux, but I did read somewhere that most external modems probably were.

Anyway, I don't think my modem is properly set up with Linux, but I don't know how to set it up.

That'll take you specifically toward setting up a modem to dial in to an ISP, and the Internet from there. I haven't used it myself (go, go, gadget-DSL!), but pretty much every other HOWTO I've used from there has been enormously helpful. Generally, if you follow the document closely and keep a good head, linuxdoc will get you through.
