WEP codes are enqryption keys that are set up in both the access point and in the client system. In short they have to match exactly for you to use a specific wireless access point. Some access points store as many as four wep keys. You need only one correct key to access the AP using WEP. Understand not all AP's use wep keys. This is a security feature. A public AP would not use wep keys.

WEP keys are stored by the use of the 'iwconfig' command. WEP keys can be 64 bit or 128 bit keys. The longer the key the more secure the AP becomes. To get a better understanding of the iwconfig command, open Konqueror, and enter 'man:/iwconfig' ( without the quotes ) where you would type a URL, and read up on the command.

wlanassistant is probably a script to help configure the wireless and interface. I use xubuntu, but not with wireless. So I can't run that script. iwconfig and ifconfog run on all distros.

Hope this helps.
