Internal Error: The second sector of stage 2 is unknown
 

Hello all

I would like to install SUSE 9.3 on a 2nd HD (First HD is Windows XP)

The installation runs well until it comes to the Resart and then the Computer said:

GRUB loading, please wait...
internal error : The second sector of stage 2 is unknown

How can i fix it?

Or should i better install LILO?

Post grub.conf ... would this be a dell? (Tell us what computer you have + partition setup). And check the jumper settings on those HDDs

Chances are it won't matter if you use grub or lilo - though grub is prettier. Which you use seems mostly a matter of personal preference... like Gnome vs KDE.

Yes i have a Dell. It is a
BTX 733, PIII
256 MB
2 Harddisks, 1. Maxtor with Windows on
2. Seagate with Linux 9.3 on (if it then would work:))

Linux gives me 3 Partitions, one is Linux, one is for Swap and another one for boot/ext2

If i am able to start Linux i can not start Windows, if i can start Windows, Linux is nowhere to be found and the bootloader is also hiding somewhere.

The Jumper setting is as followed
Maxtor: Master
Seagate: Slave

Should I change the Boot sequence of the Harddisks in BIOS?

Another Error i have is:

root (hd1,0)
Filesystem type is fat, partition type 0xc
chainloader +1

When i install Linux should i choose Overwrite MBR, or better not

I would like to have the Bootloader on the Linux Harddisk.

When you install linux it is standard to install the bootloader to hda0 (The MBA on the primary master hard drive). If you should want to get rid of linux later - you can always reinstate the windows bootloader (or keep your linux bootloader and the /boot partition it lives on, freeing the remaining space.)

There are technical reasons why some folk do it differently.

I'll still need to see the grub configuration ... it is in the /boot/grub directory and it is called grub.conf or menu.lst

did you look at the LQ HOWTO I suggested?

fdisk -l output would be nice too.

Thank you very much for your priceless help. Today I was able to install Linux 9.3 with KDE, and GNOME.

I have now GRUB on the Windows HD. Now i can access Linux or Windows without any Problems.

My friend Eamon has another problem:

His Linux 9.3 Professional decided to start in Runlevel 3 instead of Runlevel 5, which gives him
"only" the Shell. What is the solution for this Problem?

From run level three he can login and "startx" should do the trick. He can also change runlevel with init. (init(8) and inittab(5) has info).

The menue.lst or grub.conf file will have an option about the starting runlevel.

BTW: lots of folk like to start at runlevel 3 - there are advantages when things go wrong.

I could help to solve Eamons runlevel problem. He can now change from runlevel 3 to 5. Thank you very much

I have rolling/slitaz64, live but it also can install to my laptop, dell vostro 1500, full bootable version Linux,
But I got the same error as original thread author’s problem. My /boot is under /user/share, and no grub.conf or manu.lst.
It have
Gptmbr.bin
Init.custom
Sdi.c32
memdisk.lzma
mar.bin
pxelinux.0.lzma
Readme.custom

And it have /Usr/lib/grub/i386-slitaz/. Directory, which contain stage1. And. Stage2
At install process, it only generate 2 partitions, swap and Linux-primary on my local hard disk
Please help
