Intermittent scanner computer communication

Hi All

I'm failing the Zen test.

Scanner works occasionally. How would i test if there's a signal "coming into" the usb port.

I.e. whether it's simple scan not working or my scanner

Am running 10.04 and it's an epson dx5000.

Bearing in mind i've looked at similar threads and not understood either what the question was, or the reply. I need instructions like go to this place and type "xyz".

Anything more complicated i won't understand i'm afraid.

I did start a degree in electronic engineering, but i didn't finish it, so i know what a battery is, what a signal is and that's about it.

Thank you very much
