Intel ICH5R sata raid controller with Suse Linux 8.2

I'm having a new computer, the motherboard is Gigabyte 8knxp,
and I have 2 Maxtor Diamondmax 9 120Gb sata drives with it. I'm using striping with Intel ICH5R raid controller.

I've installed Windows XP on it, but I can't install Suse Linux 8.2, it don't recognise the hard drives. :( I read that the newest kernel prepatches support this controller. How could I use this kernel with Suse Linux(I have an older computer with Suse 8.2 installed)?

The kernel is not upgraded enough to handle ICH5 properly. If you can somehow start installation, go on; then after you complete the installation, upgrade the kenel to 2.4.22. 2.4.21 with some patches can also handle
ICH5, but I do not know which one.

If you are determined to freshly install debian, read:
http://www.e-aiyama.com/~toshi/Computer/Linux/SATA.html
or create a Live CD to install:
http://www.e-aiyama.com/~toshi/Compu...ux/LiveCD.html
If your distribution can "cross-install", then you can apply the similar techniques described there.
Happy computing!
